A Newborn Claim is submitted for a newborn baby that does not yet have active coverage under Alberta or another province’s healthcare system. The claim for the baby can be submitted under the parent or guardian’s valid Alberta or out-of-province healthcare number (excluding Quebec) as a Newborn Claim. If the baby has active healthcare coverage, a Newborn Claim is not needed. You can submit the claim as you normally would for a patient with active coverage.
Please note that Newborn Claims can currently only be submitted on the web and not the mobile app.
To submit a Newborn Claim on Dr. Bill, you will first need to create a patient profile for the newborn as you normally would for a patient on Dr. Bill. Even though the baby’s healthcare number is not active, you will still need to enter it on the patient’s profile. The inactive healthcare number will not be submitted on the claim. Once the information has been entered for the patient, press the “Create and Start a Claim” button. If the patient is already entered in Dr. Bill, you can skip this step.
Once you are on the claim form for the baby, you will then need to change the claim type to a Newborn Claim by clicking the “Newborn” button on the form. You will then be prompted to fill in the address information for the baby, the parent or guardian’s healthcare number along with the province they are covered under and a Newborn Code. The Newborn Code is selected from a drop down list and can either be adoption, live birth, multiple birth, or still born. In the case of multiple births when the first names are not known, provide information such as Twin A, Twin B, etc., in the claim supporting text segment that accompanies the claim.
Once you have entered the required information for the Newborn Claim, you can complete the other fields on the claim form as you normally would for a claim and save the claim.
If you are wanting to re-submit a refused claim as a Newborn Claim, you can simply click the “edit” button on the refused claim and change the claim type to “Newborn” and fill in the required information for the baby and parent or guardian. You can then save the claim and press the “Re-submit” button on the claim.
Please do not include text on Newborn Claims unless necessary to ensure that the claim is not held for manual review.
